Welcome to the Rennsteiggarten Oberhof

BOTANICAL GARDEN OF MOUNTAIN FLORA

Rennsteiggarten Oberhof

What is the „Rennsteiggarten“ ?

The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is a lovely and unique garden of mountain flora covering an area of more than 7 ha (17 acres). It hosts about 4,000 mountain plant species from Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand and the arctic region.

What is so special about it ?

Because of the climatic conditions of the Rennsteiggarten (on the ridge of the Thuringian forest at a height of 830-868m, low annual average temperature, high annual precipitation, snowcover up to 150 days) the mountain plants can develop their typical growth and blossoms.

They have been settled on natural plant areas according to their ecological needs and geographic distribution.

What can you expect ?

  • a lovely garden fitted in nature
many attractive representatives of famous mountain flora like species of gentians, primroses, bluebells, carnations, edelweiss and alpine roses
information about protected plants in Germany
  • temporary exhibitions e.g. about the 168 km Rennsteig hiking trail of the Thuringian forest, about plants and animals of this region and the local geology
  • an artificially made moor with typical plant species
  • quiet places for relaxing and enjoying nature
  • in nice weather good views, sometimes to the „Hohe Rhön“ mountains
the time when the most species are in bloom is usually from the middle of June to the middle of August, but a visit is always worthwhile
  • if booked in advance – guided garden tours for groups
